Training for Tenants
Courses are low-cost for tenants and residents of Local Authorities and Housing Associations in England, working as groups or individuals. The courses focus on positive local action to tackle problems, the development of groups and management of social housing.
Cost to social housing tenants in England: £15 inc VAT. Paid workers and others who do not wish to apply for a low cost place should contact Claire mc.lawton@traffordhall.com or phone 01244 300246 to discuss charges. The cost includes en-suite accommodation, all meals and refreshments.

Scrutiny - Involved 7 - 9 November
2011
This is an advanced course for those already involved in scrutiny,
who are members of a scrutiny panel and who have been involved in
delivering at least one scrutiny report to their landlord.
Reach Out and We'll Be There - How To Engage All
Parts of Your Community 14-15 November
2011
This course will help you understand how to 'map' your own
community, to identify other groups and partners, and use this to
develop your strategy to engage all sections including those
considered 'hard to reach'.
Understanding The Role 28-29 November 2011
This course will help you understand what
leadership in a tenant community is all about. It will help you
learn more about yourself, how to tap into your own potential, and
exercise leadership in a way that develops and engages
others.
Scrutiny - Starting Up 29 November - 1 December
2011
This course is for those brand new to scrutiny or
who have not yet been involved in completing a scrutiny
exercise.
Consulting Your Community 1-2 December 2011
This course will let you consider the best and
most effective ways of consulting in your own area.
Understanding Group Dynamics - Improving Your Work
as a Committee 16-17 January 2012
This course will provide you with ways to improve
your committee, or, if you are just setting up, to develop your
committee so that you really make an impact.
An Inspector Calls - The Role of Tenant Inspectors
23-25 January 2012
This course will give you the chance to find out
how tenant inspection fits with tenant scrutiny and the new
approach to regulation. You will examine the skills that are needed
to be a tenant inspector, the support that should be provided by
landlords and how tenants can take the lead in inspecting the
services provided by their, and other, landlords.
Working With Your Landlord 2-3 February 2012
This course will allow members of tenant groups to
understand how their landlord works and the environment within
which they are working. It will look at where opportunities for
involvement arise and consider how landlords and tenants can work
together.
Making Meetings Work For You 9-10 February
2012
Find out how to get the most out of meetings,
whatever your role. Skilful participation can transform meetings,
which in turn encourages more people to attend.
Spreading Your Knowledge and Understanding 20-22
February 2012
The course will give you the skills to run short, simple sessions
for other tenants in your group and local area. It will include
practice sessions, with feedback, for all participants.
Planning, Monitoring and Evaluating 23-24 February
2012
In this reflective and motivating course, groups
will have an opportunity to look at the work they have undertaken
in the past, share their lessons with others and plan ways of
improving their work in the future. For committees and groups that
are in their early days, the course will help to establish a
powerful planning process from the start.
Coping with Anti-Social Behaviour 27-29 February
2012
This course will explain current policy and what
the law says about ASB, what landlords can and should be doing,
will help tenants decide local priorities for action, and will help
with inspiring ideas and good practice from other projects across
the country.
Committee Skills for Tenant Organisations 12-14
March 2012
This course will give you and your group the
confidence to work as an effective and mutually supportive
committee.
Representing Your Community - Negotiation and
Influencing Skills 19-20 March 2012
This course will build your strengths to represent
your community in the wider arena. It will build your confidence,
help you to understand key communication skills and recognise the
needs and interests of others in your community.
Tenants on the Web 26-28 March 2012
This course will take you right through the
structures of developing and designing your own web presence using
free web site designing software, and using and incorporating
social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. You will also
learn how to build an audience and link to your landlord's
website.
