As both groups are from the same area and work with the same tenants they chose to run a joint event, pooling the grant money awarded.
Members of Cheshire East Federation TARA attended the Wider World training course in March 2014.
They are a relatively new Tenant Association working together with other tenants in Cheshire East to inform them on tenant rights and expectations.
After attending the course the group successfully applied for a grant of £437.10 to hold an event to bring together a variety of agencies that serve the community. The money was to be used for room hire, conference packs and light refreshments for the event.
Chelford TARA attended You and Your Community Rights in May 2014.
The group were awarded a grant of £400 to support Cheshire East Federation TARA’s event, the money was to be spent on the hire of a stage and roller banners which would help with promotion of the group.
The overall aims of the event were to increase membership in the two groups and promote tenant involvement in Cheshire East. They wanted to empower tenants and increase their knowledge and skills.
A number of different agencies and speakers were invited to the event, including; Jon Findlay (Trafford Hall), Michael Gelling (TAROE), New Charter Housing, Barnsley Federation, National Federation of Tenant Management Organisations, and other local organisations.
The event took place on the 25th September 2014 at Marthall Village Hall near Knutsford and was attended by 79 people.
The event benefitted tenants throughout the Cheshire East area and will raise awareness of their rights and opportunities available.
The feedback forms from the event confirmed that many tenants would like to be more involved in housing provision.
After the success of this event both groups plan on running more events in the future to help engage with the wider community and increase awareness of tenants’ rights.
